THIS FRIDAY IS HALLOWEEN

People please do not forget to celebrate Halloween Nite. Go out to one-U or TGIF and you will find some interesting happening there. Celebrate in the 31st of October every year.

The Origin of Halloween

While there are many versions of the origins and old customs of Halloween, some remain consistent by all accounts. Different cultures view Holloween somewhat differently but traditional Halloween practices remain the same.

Halloween culture can be traced back to the Druids, a Celtic culture in Ireland, Britain and Northern Europe. Roots lay in the feast of Samhain, which was annually on October 31st to honor the dead.

Samhain signifies "summers end" or November. Samhain was a harvest festival with huge sacred bonfires, marking the end of the Celtic year and beginning of a new one. Many of the practices involved in this celebration were fed on superstition.

The Celts believed the souls of the dead roamed the streets and villages at night. Since not all spirits were thought to be friendly, gifts and treats were left out to pacify the evil and ensure next years crops would be plentiful. This custom evolved into trick-or-treating.

So much for the history of Halloween, main thing is this is an opportunity to celebrate and hang out with friends.

On the right is a picture of an Equitant Oncidium. A miniature plant. This is a small version of the "dancing lady" orchid which you can find in many a gardens here in Petaling Jaya. Hardy orchid it grows best facing the morning sun and needs lots of watering. However like any other orchid the rule of the thumb is never to over water, just make sure it is moist. Free flowering that last 1 to 2 weeks with a sweet scent.
I have 3 species of this type of orchid and believe it is a good orchid to start with for beginners.

RIDDLE FOR THE DAY
